Ellen DeGeneres is best known for being the first openly gay lead character in her self titled sitcom, "Ellen". It was very controversial then, but now, virtually every sitcom on television has an openly gay character. Ellen was the pioneer that made this possible. but Ellen's strong convictions are not limited to gay rights. She is also an avid supporter of animal rights and the environment. She is a vegetarian and a public endorser of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), appearing in their anti-fur ads and acting as co-host at their televised awards gala.
